1994 Insignia and 1990 Dunn Howell Mountain

Some of the killer California wines from Friday night. The Jeroboam of 1994 Insignia was one of my personal favorites. Insignia has a well earned reputation for needing 20 years in the bottle before it is ready to drink. With only 26 years in this large format I was slightly dubious if the wine would be drinking or not, but wow! What a amazing wine. We decanted the wine about 45 min before pouring it, but this wine lit up the moment it was opened. Wild black cherries, dark currants, pipe tobacco, and cooking spice shot out of the glass like a firecracker. The palate was satiny smooth and while the tannins were still present, they were reserved enough to provide backbone while not overtaking the gorgeous fruit.

The 1990 magnum of Stags Leap Cask 23 was a real surprise with almost as much fruit as the 94 Insignia. The Stags leap was slightly more reserved showing black olive, mocha, plum, and cinnamon. A lovely bottle!

Competing for wine of the night was the 1990 Dunn Howell Mountain. We actually poppe two of these, they were so good! Classic dark fruit with blackberry, black cherry, and vanilla bean. This wine was perfectly balanced and drank like a perfectly smooth highway road on a moonlight night.

It has been a while since I have had a aged BV. The 1966 Georges de Latour was still drinkable but had lost almost all of its fruit. I’m sure if we would have tasted it on its own it would have shown better but coming in the heels of the younger and more vibrant Cali Cabs the wine was unfortunately lost...
